Roxy and my allergies

I don’t usually post this sort of thing but today I felt like doing something a bit different for me.

Recently I have had to rehouse our beloved cat Roxy and my daughter’s pet rat Penny due to severe allergies. It is ridiculous to think that I have suffered from allergies all of my life but have only recently had allergy testing done and found out that I am allergic to cat’s, dog’s, feather mix (goose, duck & chicken), mould and the rat, plus what I had always know which was grass and pollen.

How strange that as a child I was constantly at the doctors about this and was one of the first children to be put on numerous different medications that had only just come out, as a bit of a guinea pig but no one ever suggested allergy testing.

I have to say I was extremely upset when I found out that I had these other allergies and hadn’t know for all this time. It was really hard knowing that the major cause of my allergies, which was my cat could have been avoided for such a long time and would have saved me a lot of tears, pain, frustration and just generally feeling like crap constantly. I decided to stop feeling sorry for myself and just be grateful that at least had found out.

We ended up deciding that we would have to find Roxy a new home after doing a few tests to check that it was in fact her causing me the worst problems. It was terrible to have to say goodbye to her, I thought I was fine and couldn’t figure out why I was crying or felt like crying all the time for days, and then I realised why.

I am really pleased to be able to say that even though it was horrible and I felt like the worst mother in the world (there’s nothing more heartbreaking than your kids crying their eyes out because of a problem that you have) we were able to find great new homes for Penny the Rat and Roxy our cat. Thank goodness that it has made a HUGE difference already to how I feel, it’s unbelievable really.

I was updating my family photos and came across this shot of  Roxy and so I thought I’d edit it and do a post on my blog and write about what happened to me.

  1. how heartbreaking! My goodness! And she looks adorable. I hope you get full of energy to make it worthwhile.

    • Yes it certainly sucked, but it has made a HUGE difference to me, it’s amazing really so it has been worth it.

  2. I am so sorry to hear about this. I am glad that you have had the pleasure of owning these animals and create fond memories for both you and your children.
We too had recently gone through the same experience except with two guinea pigs that we gave our daughter of 3yrs. About six months later, my wife just couldn’t handle it anymore. She didn’t think her allergies would be so severe and that the medication would control symptoms better. We still remember Rosy and Myriam and talk about them.

  3. I’ve forwarded my niece a link to your blog post here – it may well be her problem too, so thanks for sharing!

  4. Hi, I’m glad you found out more about your allergies as it will help for the rest of your life but I’m sorry to hear about the necessary moves you’ve had to make. You did the right thing! I am allergic to rats too…and my husband has 9! I have taken up caring for an aquarium and luckily can manage my allergies. Best wishes and hope you feel healthier.

  5. Oh my, how very sad that you had to give up your feline companion. Although Roxy’s fur seems like a double whammy. I’m sure Roxy is happy, and will always be part of your heart.

    • Yes it definitely didn’t help that she was a long haired cat who sheds a lot, never mind. Yes I’m sure she is happy with her new family, she has lot’s of beds she can sleep on.
